Tubal ligation, also known as “getting your tubes tied,” is a permanent form of birth control. The fallopian tubes are surgically cut or blocked so that eggs can no longer travel to the uterus for fertilization. Tubal ligation is considered more than 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy.
Tubal ligation can be done in a hospital or an outpatient surgical center. The surgery usually takes less than 30 minutes and is done under general anesthesia, which means you’ll be asleep during the procedure.
Most women can go home the same day as the surgery. You may have some cramping and discomfort for a few days after the procedure. Your doctor will likely prescribe pain medication and advise you to take it easy for a few days.
