What is Ovarian Cysts?
Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs or pockets in an ovary or on its surface. They’re often benign, but sometimes can be cancerous. Cysts can cause pelvic pain, irregular periods, and other symptoms. Treatment may involve taking birth control pills, surgery, or watchful waiting.
Most women have at least one ovarian cyst at some point during their childbearing years, though most of these cysts cause no symptoms and disappear on their own within a few months. However, some ovarian cysts grow large enough to cause pain or interfere with normal ovulation (the release of eggs from the ovaries). These larger cysts are called functional ovarian cysts, and usually occur during the childbearing years. There are two types of functional ovarian cysts:
Follicular cysts form when the sac that holds an egg doesn’t open to release the egg as it should during ovulation. The sac continues to grow and fills with fluid. Follicular cysts are usually harmless and go away on their own within a few months.
Corpus luteum cysts form after the egg is released during ovulation. The sac that held the egg collapses and fills with fluid. These types of cysts usually go away on their own within a few weeks.
While most ovarian cysts don’t cause any symptoms, some can cause pain in the lower abdomen on the side of the affected ovary. This pain may be sharp or dull, and can come and go. Some women also experience bloating, breast tenderness, and changes in their menstrual cycle when they have ovarian cysts.
