What is a Dilation and Curettage Procedure?
Dilation and Curettage is a medical procedure that is performed in order to remove tissue from the inside of the uterus. The procedure is also known as a D&C.
A D&C can be performed for a variety of reasons, including:
-To diagnose or treat abnormal bleeding from the uterus
-To remove tissue after a miscarriage or abortion
-To prepare the cervix for a future pregnancy
The first step of a D&C is to dilate, or open, the cervix. This is done by inserting thin rods into the cervix and gradually increasing their size. Once the cervix is dilated enough, a suction device or a curette (a sharp instrument) is used to remove any tissue from the uterine lining.
The entire procedure takes about 10-15 minutes and is usually performed under general anesthesia. Recovery time is usually pretty short, with most women feeling back to normal within a day or two. However, it is important to avoid strenuous activity or sexual intercourse for at least a week after the procedure in order to give your body time to heal.
