What Is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm inside a woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilization. The goal of IUI is to increase the number of sperm that reaches the fallopian tubes and subsequently increase the chance of pregnancy.
IUI is typically used when the male partner has a low sperm count or when the female partner has issues with her fallopian tubes.
IUI is also used when the cause of infertility is unknown or unexplained.
The first step in IUI is to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. This is done using fertility drugs such as clomiphene citrate or gonadotropins. Once the eggs are mature, they are collected through a process called ovarian aspiration.

How does the IUI procedure work?
The IUI procedure is typically performed during a woman’s natural ovulation cycle or with the use of fertility medications to stimulate ovulation. A semen sample is collected from the man and the sperm are then washed and concentrated. The sperm are then placed into the woman’s uterus through the cervix using a small, flexible catheter.
After the IUI procedure, the woman will be asked to remain lying down for a few minutes to minimize the risk of the sperm leaking out of the uterus. She can then go about her normal activities for the rest of the day.
IUI is usually performed as an outpatient procedure and does not require anesthesia. Some women may experience mild cramping during or after the procedure.
